At Ecowatts, we pride ourselves on delivering high-quality electrical upgrades that not only improve safety and performance but also ensure compliance with the latest UK regulations. One of our recent projects involved the upgrade of an outdated three-phase distribution board that had been using old Type 4 MCBs — a setup that no longer meets modern safety or performance standards.

Out with the Old – Why Type 4 MCBs Are a Problem

Type 4 MCBs were once commonly used in industrial settings due to their tolerance of high inrush currents, but they are now considered outdated and unsuitable for most installations. They pose a higher risk of nuisance tripping or, worse, failing to trip in time to prevent damage during a fault. With changes in regulations and improvements in safety standards, these older breakers are no longer compliant or recommended for use in modern systems.

In with the New – Modern Protection with RCBOs & MCBs

For this upgrade, we installed a brand-new Hager three-phase distribution board, fitted with a full set of RCBOs (Residual Current Breaker with Overcurrent protection) and modern Type B and C MCBs. This new configuration offers superior protection for each circuit by combining earth leakage and overcurrent protection into one compact device — enhancing both safety and fault isolation.

RCBOs ensure that individual circuits trip independently in the event of a fault, meaning a single issue no longer disrupts the entire installation. The updated Type B/C MCBs are perfectly suited to modern commercial loads, offering faster and more accurate disconnection.

Why We Chose Hager

We always specify top-quality materials, and in this case, Hager was our brand of choice for the distribution board. Known for their robust design, reliability, and compliance with UK wiring regulations, Hager boards are a trusted standard in commercial and industrial environments. Their modular layout and user-friendly design make future maintenance easier and neater, ensuring a tidy, professional finish.

Conclusion

This upgrade not only brings the client’s installation in line with the latest safety standards but also improves the overall reliability and efficiency of their electrical system. At Ecowatts, we’re committed to delivering modern, safe, and compliant solutions on every project.
